Education and Training |
Courses of Study and Training Leading to Certification:
Programs of study leading to certification will be offered. We have three basic programs of psychoanalytic study and certification.
Individualized Program of Study:
An individual may design her or his own program of study. A course of study may be proposed by the candidate, which would be reviewed and supported by an adviser from MSIPS's faculty. Supervision and analysis or psychotherapy could be similarly arranged. Candidates are expected to attend public lectures and on-going student or case consultation groups when possible.
Psychoanalysis Program:
In this program we recommend a core concentration of classes including; Classical, Jung, Object Relations, Self Psychology, Relational, and Case Consultation. Two courses from the Philosophical class list and two from the Cultural/Spiritual list could then be individually chosen to round out one's training program. Each candidate would arrange a course of analysis of 450 hours over 3 years minimum and complete a minimum of 150 hours of psychoanalytic supervision with 2 separate supervisors. Each supervision would need to be 50 hours minimum. Supervisors of both genders are encouraged. Previous analysis and supervision may be applicable, on an individual basis. Candidates are expected to attend public lectures and on-going student or case consultation groups when possible.
Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program:
In this program the candidate is asked to choose 3 core classes from the list of Classical, Jung, Object Relations, and Relational and that Self Psychology is highly encouraged. One class from the Philosophical section, one from the Cultural/Spiritual section, and one class of Case Consultation would round out the coursework. One year of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy is required, and 25 hours of Individual Psychoanalytic Supervision. Previous analysis and supervision may be applicable on an individual basis. Candidates are expected to attend public lectures and on-going student or case consultation groups when possible.
Any of the three programs can be taken from an Academic Tract. Those who choose the Academic Tract must meet all the requirements of the chosen program except for the supervision requirement.
Individuals who have already attained a certification in Psychoanalysis may arrange a second certification with us by designing a program of elective courses from within our curriculum. Others who wish may simply apply for certification based on previous education and training if they feel the values of the society match theirs.
A student-admission program is also offered for University students who are interested in psychoanalysis. This program allows those who choose to move seamlessly from graduate school or medical school into psychoanalytic training. Once pre-admitted, the student may join a monthly case consultation group. This group will be offered with suggested psychoanalytic teachings until the student is ready to attend more rigorous education or training.
