Psychodynamic Treatment of Self-Injurious Behavior

This course will introduce the phenomena of self-inflicted violence (SIV) through the lens of psychodynamic theory and models of affect regulation. We will explore the conscious and unconscious origins and meanings of SIV, both the adaptive and maladaptive components of these behaviors, and discuss the treatment implications when working with people who struggle in this way.


Practical Psychoanalysis

This course will introduce the students to basic psychoanalytic concepts and how to use them in our practice. We will discuss transference, countertransference, interpretation, and resistance. We will discuss how to use , working through, beginning phase, termination, unconscious, free association and other pertinent concepts.

Self Psychology Theory

This class will explore new ways of looking at transference. We will be using Heinz Kohut’s work on Self Psychology to not only look at the transferences (e.g., mirroring, idealizing and twinship) but also, to look at concepts such as empathy and shame.

Jungian Theory

The seeds of C. G. Jung's theories came directly from his own experience of the psyche working in his life. In this course, we will see the origins of many of his ideas in his autobiography, Memories, Dreams, Reflections, and use that and other readings to examine Jung's remarkable influence on depth analysis and individuation in general.

Love in the Analytic Process

This course will introduce students to the use of love as it is experienced by the analyst in the analytic process. Love and its curative aspects will be addressed.

Psychoanalytic Mystics

Psychoanalysts who struggled through the course of their careers with the intersection of mystical awareness and psychoanalytic theory will be examined. The work of Carl Jung, Marion Milner, Wilfred Bion, Christopher Bollas and Michael Eigen among others will be explored. Concepts such as mystical nihilism, duality, unitive consciousness and psychological alchemy will be approached with an eye for incorporating this wisdom into psychoanalytic practice.

This 10 week course will take place in Birmingham on Monday Mornings from 10 to 11:30 March 17 to May 19, 2007.
