Marianne Grunberg-Manago, 73, will become the first woman president of the French Academy of Sciences. The Russian-born biochemist, who is a director of research at the national agency for scientific research (CNRS), was elected vice-president last week and will succeed Jacques Friedel as president on 1 January. Grunberg-Manago says that she will do what she can to ensure that French research receives the funding it needs. She also says she wants to strengthen contacts with science academies in Eastern Europe,
