THE SOVIET Ministry of Geology and the US Geological Survey have signed an agreement to cooperate more extensively on research in earth sciences in the future. At the 28th International Geological Congress in Washington this week, Dallas Peck, the director of the USGS, and Deputy Minister Yevgeny Pelmenyov pledged to promote more and better earth sciences in the two countries. Peck said: ‘Discussions are already under way on projects involving oil and gas resource assessment techniques, comparative studies of US and Soviet ore deposits and analysis of samples from the Ministry’s super-deep drillhole.’ Both the US and the USSR will benefit from increased collaboration and access to results. Soviet geologists are keen to compare the tectonics of the Lake Baikal rift in Siberia with the Rio Grande rift, and to examine ore deposits. The big prizes for American earth scientists are samples from the super-deep well in Kola, in the northwest of the USSR,
